Info, opinions and comments about Waikawa Beach.
Waikawa Beach lies half way between Ōtaki and Levin in the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand.
It has a rich history. Māori enjoyed the bounty of lakes, rivers and seas from earliest times. Te Rauparaha swept through and established a pā here. When Europeans arrived they brought a hotel, rope making, flax mills. The beach was part of the major land route between Whanganui and Wellington.
These days it’s a sleepy little seaside village with a couple of hundred houses, no shops or commerce, a small river, and folks who enjoy a simple and quiet life.
